This Cheesy Spinach Orzo is an easy 20 minute meal! Made with fresh spinach, onions and garlic this tasty pasta is also loaded with freshly grated cheese!
If you are growing spinach in your gardens, then first I am jealous because we didn’t get to plant any, and second it would go perfect on this dish!
We love adding spinach to our pasta dishes! It’s a vegetable that is pretty versatile and adds depth to the pasta!

If you have been around here long enough, you know that my hubby is from Italy and we tend to eat more of a mediterranean diet than anything else.
Don’t get me wrong I love to make easy oven baked chicken tenderloins any day of the week for the kids but pasta is our go to meal! Also risotto is something we eat a lot of as well!
Some of my favorite pasta dishes with spinach is this creamy tomato spinach pasta or this spinach ricotta pasta bake. What great about spinach is that you don’t only have to put it over pasta.
We use it for these Bacon Egg and Cheese Spinach Cups! One of my kids favorites as well!
Ingredients you will need for this Cheesy Spinach Orzo!
- 1 1/2 cup orzo pasta
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves
- 4 cups fresh spinach
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
Directions to make this pasta!
- Cook 1 1/2 cups orzo pasta according to package. (about 10 minutes)
- In the meantime, add olive oil and onions to medium pan. Cook for 3 minutes or until onions are softened.
- Add garlic and salt. Continue to cook on medium heat for 3 minutes.
- Add spinach and continue to cook on medium-low for 5 minutes.
- When pasta is done, drain and add to pan.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons olive oil.
- Stir in cheese.
MAJOR TIP FOR YOU!
If you feel like your pasta is looking a little dry, simple save some of your pasta water when you drain the pasta and add it in at the end! Seriously is a life saver for me!

Cheesy Spinach Orzo
A 20 minute dinner option with just a few ingredients! This Cheesy Spinach Orzo is perfect for using fresh spinach!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup orzo pasta
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 4 cups fresh spinach
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
Instructions
- Cook 1 1/2 cups orzo pasta according to package. (about 10 minutes)
- In the meantime, add olive oil and onions to medium pan. Cook for 3 minutes or until onions are softened.
- Add garlic and salt. Continue to cook on medium heat for 3 minutes.
- Add spinach and continue to cook on medium-low for 5 minutes.
- When pasta is done, reserve 1/4 cup water, drain the rest and add to pan.
- Stir in 2 tablespoons olive oil.
- Stir in cheese.
- Serve warm and ENJOY!
Notes
To keep pasta from drying out reserve 1/4 cup of pasta water! Add this only if needed, before the cheese.
