When I think of pie, apple always comes to mind. It something Mom always had around the house for holidays or just for any time we wanted a dessert. Normally would keep frozen ones in the freezer but during the holidays she made hers homemade.
Before this year, I always made a homemade crust as well but this year, I decided to simplify it by using a pre-made crust!
HOW TO MAKE SIMPLE APPLE PIE!
INGREDIENTS:
- Apples– I love using fuji or honey crisp for this pie.
- Cinnamon – using ground cinnamon is preferred. It blends so well with the apples.
- Butter – the type of butter I buy is unsalted, but you can use any kind.
- Brown sugar– when cooking the apples, the brown sugar helps combined all of the ingredients together and give it a nice caramel flavor.
- Cornstarch– this helps to thicken the sauce up when cooking the apples. DON’T SKIP THIS STEP!
- Pre-made pie crust – I always prefer homemade to store bought, but this really helps cut down in the preparation time for the pie. Directions in recipe card!!
- Milk– you can use milk or even egg wash. I preferred brushing the top with milk for this pie to give it a nice golden crust.
- Sugar – coarse sugar is the last ingredient. It has a larger crystals than granulated sugar.
DIRECTIONS:
- In a large bowl add apples and cinnamon. Stir. Set aside.
- On medium heat in a large pot add butter. Melt, then add brown sugar, simmer for 2 minutes. Stir in apples.
- Allow to cook for 10 minutes. Stir in cornstarch. Take off heat and set aside.
- Spray 9 inch pie pan with non stick cooking spray. Lay one pie crust in bottom of pan.
- Pour in apples.
- Top with second crust. Pinch edges to seal the pie.
- Brush top with milk. Sprinkle sugar. Bake!
Can you use a homemade crust? Yes you can! With any pie crust the edges may cook faster then the center, so be prepared to line your edges with foil so they do not burn.
Recipe for homemade crust is listed in the recipes!!!
Brushing the milk on the top helps give it a nice golden color to the pie.
Why cook the apples first? This actually cuts down on your total cook time. Normally apple pies can take up to an hour to cook. By dicing the apples and cooking them for 10 minutes. Baking the pie only takes 20 minutes! Win-win!
